First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I am known in the interwebs as Dreamslayer28; I am a relatively new player to War Robots. As a matter of fact, I have just started touching the game three weeks ago, and I currently have a 6/6 four-robot hangar which is learning the ropes of the game in a place called Silver League I. Nice place to be, no?
In real life, I work as an English teacher at an elementary school for my day job, writes a range of things (yes, I don’t call myself a full-fledged writer just yet, I still need to get better at my craft) and I play various video games such as Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Dota 2 and Hearthstone, among others.
So first of all, I found this game thanks to a very weird circumstance: Google Ads. Yes, it did make an impression on me. The War Robots ad appeared for so many days in a row and I saw some friends playing it that I finally gave it a try.
Now, I did not expect how the community would look like; after all, the game had no in-game chat; a player has to get a voice app like Line or Discord in order to communicate with his teammates. Soon enough, I witnessed first-hand the “fade” phenomenon inside Bronze League II, so I decided to make an account at the WR Wiki Forum. I ranted about it – and to my legitimate surprise, the discussion was actually humorous and civil!
Diving deeper into the community, I must say that for a mobile game like War Robots, having a robust and creative community supported by the company is one of the best things that I’ve ever seen in my life. Sure, Pixonic doesn’t have yet an esports component like Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Vainglory or Mobile Legends, but it is just as sure as competitive and engaging in comparison to the “bigger” and “massive” titles in the industry.
Going into the gameplay, it was definitely a mix of control-based and tempo-based gameplay, which is quite different from games such as MechWarrior Online (the archetype of a control-based title) or Call of Duty (where tempo and strong reflexes are the norms). I loved the fact that there is room for different styles of play, although obviously there is a metagame that most top players subscribe to. I’m rather busy experimenting with setups; trying to find the best way that I can use my hangar with the weapons that I currently have.
In addition, the 4th of July event is ongoing at the time of writing, and changes in player behavior on the matchmaking servers have clearly changed both my stats and the way that I approach the game at the moment. I am aiming to go towards Stretch Goal 8, which rewards the player with an Ancile; that will allow me to do with fewer hours per day of play while getting the most out of the event.
Experience-wise, I am really enjoying the game right now. Without exaggerating, this is one of the only two competitive mobile game titles that got me hooked; the other title is Hearthstone, which is a great title in itself. I enjoyed playing against all sorts of opponents and having those fights in which I can clearly see that we were able to control the enemy’s aggression despite their use of “Tarancilots” and rocket setups.
I would like to think that War Robots is best played with people whom you know well and whom you could relate with; in other terms, that it is a shared experience best done in the heat of the moment. Win or lose, I definitely enjoyed my matches with my friends, cousins and nephews; I particularly loved those clutch moments where we were able to turn the tide of the match despite being on our last bots!
Of course, not all my experiences in War Robots are rosy and colorful, as there were quite a good number of thorns that I’ve encountered inside the game. From 0/0 players to faders who just do enough damage in order not to be marked as such, I really hope that Pixonic will implement an intensive report system similar to Valve’s Dota 2, where they throw you into “low priority” (basically a zero-reward system of the current Leaver’s Queue in WR where players need to win between three to seven matches to get out). That will protect the vast majority of players who want to play competitively, have fun and play their best.
Finally, here is my take on the upcoming Korean-themed and “heavy weather-named” metagame: Pixonic is definitely changing up the way the title is being played through introducing a new in-game mechanic in Dash as well as a couple of weapons that are usable in multiple roles and situations. I firmly believe that in the long run, this will diversify gameplay, which in turn leads to a better experience overall.
To sum up, I observed that War Robots has an excellent community that works hand-in-hand with all the stakeholders of the game in order to provide an unparalleled experience. I also liked the gameplay a lot to the point that it is one of my favorite mobile titles and despite the numerous hiccups that the game is experiencing right now, there’s ample reason to hope that it will still be an amazing title.
Yes, it is a great day to be on the battlefield…and I do hope to continue my adventures in War Robots!
